About Lily

Lily Jamali joined the public radio program “Marketplace” in October 2021. Prior to Marketplace, she spent three years as co-host of KQED’s The California Report airing on NPR stations throughout the state. She also served as a correspondent for the show. While at KQED, she closely followed and routinely broke exclusive stories about PG&E’s bankruptcy. Her work was shaped by her reporting on the 2018 Camp Fire while it was still burning in Butte County, a region she first covered as a local television reporter from 2004 to 2006. She has also guest-hosted KQED’s flagship program “Forum.”

Before KQED, Lily was the anchor of Bloomberg Markets: Canada, where she steered editorial coverage for her hour-long daily news program covering financial markets, economics, and politics. She also reported for the Bloomberg Terminal, coordinating with the editorial team to break stories on-air and writing enterprise stories focused on impacts of the Trump administration’s immigration policy on the Canadian economy.

From 2014 to 2017, Lily worked as a reporter and producer for Reuters TV, covering tech, company news, and economics from both San Francisco and New York.  In 2014, Lily was part of the Reuters team at the World Economic Forum in Davos and the Aspen Ideas Festival.

Prior to that, Lily worked as a freelance correspondent, traveling to Brazil on a travel grant from PRI/BBC’s “The World” in 2012. In Rio de Janeiro, she covered public safety in the favelas, the impact of the Eurozone crisis on immigration, the shifting role of Catholicism, and the indigenous practice of Umbanda. Other grants and awards include a SAJA Reporting Fellowship to cover the impact of climate change on the Maldives, the National Press Photographers Association’s Paul Threlfall Award, and a Mid-Career Grant from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Lily was part of a team that won Columbia Journalism School’s Leslie Sander Social Justice Award for a documentary they directed and produced on Irish immigrants returning to Ireland from the Bronx.

Lily has also reported and produced at NBC News, the Huffington Post, NY1 News, News12 Westchester, WNYT-TV (Albany, NY) and KRCR-TV (Redding, CA).

Lily speaks Farsi, Spanish and French. She holds an M.B.A. in Finance from New York University’s Stern School of Business, a Master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, and a Bachelor’s degree in English from UCLA.
